Special Projects
The Milwaukee Center for Independence, a non-profit community-based organization, has been responding to the increasing and changing requirements of people with special needs since 1938. Their more than 50 innovative programs assist people of all ages - from infants to senior citizens – and touch more than 10,000 lives each year. MCFI asked Peggy Brown to lead a project involving all its clients to create a sculptural installation in the atrium of their headquarters.
Peggy originated the concept of the “Ball of Sunshine” – a hanging spherical sculpture that catches the light and the imagination of everyone who encounters it. Many of MCFI’s clients of all ages and skill levels contributed to the sculpture by drawing on clear plastic cups with colored markers, and the combination of hundreds of these individual masterpieces, held together with simple binder clips, resulted in truly inspired works of art. These sculptures capture and radiate sunshine, both literally and figuratively.
The simplicity of materials and construction, mixed with the artwork of so many wonderful people, make it a rich and elegant sculpture that speaks to the souls of all who participated in the project.
